Installing the pedal latch
Install the locking system or follow the instructions that come with the pedals. The latch should be located on the sole of the shoe so that the center of the foot is above the center of the pedal shaft. If necessary, you can remove the insole and operate the latch retention washer from inside the shoe. The card locking position is largely individual, and affects strength and comfort. Maximize the force by locking the card over the sole of the foot or slightly forward. Locking the card slightly to the rear of your feet increases comfort. When installing the latch to the insole for the first time, temporarily tighten the latch bolt to 2.4NM. Practice the clip lock action inside and outside the pedal.Once the best position for the latch is determined, re-tighten the latch mounting bolts. The recommended locking bolt torque for final installation is 5-6Nm. Do not overtighten the bolts in the lock washer. If screwed out, the lock washer should be replaceable from the inside of the shoe by removing the insole.
Before riding
Before riding with new shoes with latches and self-locking pedals, you should practice the use of cycling shoes and self-locking pedal systems. With one foot standing on the ground, practice the inner and outer clamping action of the pedal.First practice the internal and external clamping of the pedal system several times in an open area until the movement becomes proficient.
Care and maintenance
Riding shoes, if properly maintained, will perform well in long-distance riding. To clean dirt or road dirt-covered cycling shoes, wipe them with a wet sponge.Never use a washing machine, strong detergent or wire brush to clean cycling shoes.Do not expose your cycling shoes to extreme heat, and do not leave them in the car on a hot day. Drying with fire, radiators, hair dryers or other heat sources can damage the surface material and damage the shoe shape. When the latch is dirty or worn, shoes and pedals may not be properly toothed. Check for dust or debris in the latch area and replace worn latches.Wet shoes should be allowed to dry at room temperature. Insert a newspaper into the shoe to help absorb moisture and maintain the shape of the shoe. In most cases, the newspaper will dry the shoes after overnight.
